Minutes of the Section Meeting
at the 13th Annual Meeting of the Academia, Rotterdam, 14 June 2001
- NEW MEMBERS:
Since the last meeting new members were elected who were not listed
in the last AE Membership Directory reflecting the status at the end of
Enrique Alarcon, Madrid;
Jiri Bicak, Praha;

Jean-Pierre Eckman, Geneva;
Norman A. Fleck, Cambridge

New members were presented at the Section Meeting by the Section
Chairman, Norbert Kroo, and were greeted at the Opening Ceremony
by President, Stig Strömholm.
The Academia has 1941 members at this moment.
- NOMINATIONS for New Members:
Deadline for nominations is extended to Sept. 1, 2001.
Members are asked to nominate new members. All nominations should be
forwarded by two members from different countries to the Section Chairman.
- EU RESEARCH ADVISORY BOARD:
The European Commissioner for Research, Philippe Busquin,
has established an
advisory board, including 20 members from academia (nominated by ESF),
20 from industry and 5 others to be nominated by Busquin.
Out of the 20 members from academia 9 are members of the AE.
From the Section, Professors Norbert Kroo, and Arnold Schmidt
are elected to the Board.
- NOMINATIONS for PRESIDENT:
President Stig Strömholm's term runs out next year and he announced
he is not continuing. Nominations for new president are most welcome,
and should be addresses to Stig Strömholm.
Deadline for nominations is Dec. 31, 2001. One of the basic goals
of the academia for the next period is to strengthen the institutional
ties between the European Commission and the Academia.
- NEXT ANNUAL MEETING:
will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, between
Oct. 9-12, 2002. The topic of the meeting is "RISK".
Subsequent Annual Meetings will be held in
Graz (2003), Helsinki (2004), Moscow (2005).
- The section has decided to organize, at the next annual
meeting, a mini-symposium entitled "The perception of risk as an element of
Jules Deutsch accepted to coordinate this mini-symposium. He looks forward
to receive the suggestions of the section members to the adress:
firstname.lastname@example.org before mid-september.
- WORKSHOP on VIRTUALITY:
The Academia organizes a workshop on "Virtuality and Electronic Information"
in Venice in the 2nd half of November, 2001.
- SCIENCE and SOCIETY:
According to the plans the topic "Science and Society" was
discussed. Jules Deutsch gave a summary presentation (See as separate
item under the
Approved by Norbert Kroo and Jules Deutsch.
